I. Summary:

Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, spoke of Tibet and the Olympics at a speech at Peking University on Wednesday. During this speech, Rudd said that he opposes the Olympic boycott that some countries may be participating in. He went on to say that he does not agree with how China is handling the situation in Tibet. He said that something must be done for their struggles to independence. As a friend of China, he will have a conference with China to discuss their actions and see if he can help work out the problems. China, on the other hand, says that they are handling the situation correctly.

II. Reactions:

A. This article directly relates to the AP world theme of impact of interaction among and within major societies. This is because China is interacting with Tibet, causing a major impact on other countries, such as Australia.

B. Tibet has been fighting for their independence from China ever since they were conquered in 1959. Since then, there has been a lot of tension between the two societies. Now, their tension is increasing even more, causing problems with other countries and the upcoming Olympic events.

C. The author is probably Japanese, considering it is written by a Japanese newspaper. He or she is an outsider on the events going on.

D. I could not find any indication of the author's point of view.

E. I would like to here from the president of the Olympics committee. I would like to hear whathe thinks about the boycotts and what he will do about them.

F. I have to agree with everything Rudd is saying. I do not think they should boycott the Olympics. The Olympics is a time that countries come together to compete and this possibly not occuring is a very sad thing to me. I have been looking at articles on this, as you can tell cause this is my second post on the situation, and it is so upseting that people can not get along to do something that has been an event for so many years. I am so glad that Australia is getting involved to try to help the situation in China. More countries need to do the same.
