II. Summary
President Bush issued a request to install a missile defense system and was supported by members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He also requested that the countries of Ukraine and Georgia, formerly part of the Soviet Union, but was rejected. Albania and Croatia have been offered invitation into the alliance but the country of Macedonia, like Ukraine and Georgia, was rejected. Some believe he fought hard for these two countries in order to leave a statement with his last term for peace with former Soviet nations. Along with the same views of Russia, Italy, Hungary and the Benelux countries, Germany and France said the two Bush supported countries weren’t in a stable enough state to be in the NATO.

III Reactions:
A) This article relates to the AP World History theme of impact of interaction among and within major societies. The NATO is a group with constant interaction of major societies that work together to stabilize the world. Expanding their territory to different nations could lead to positive results like world peace, or end with World War III.
B) The NATO was founded on April 4, 1949 when the North Atlantic Treaty was signed in Washington, DC. The organization was started after WWII and was one of the major sides during the Cold War against those nations that were apart of the Warsaw Pact. Since founded, 6 expansion dates have occurred with the most recent being April 3, 2008 in order to add Croatia and Albania.
C) The writers of this article are from the United States.
D) The United States is a founder of the NATO, which could have swayed the opinion of this article. One from the US may believe the president was right to offer expansion and the shield plan. For the most part, straight fact is given with the occasional quote from Germany, France, or the US.
E) In order to see more into this issue, it would be good to hear from a leader of Albania or Croatia to see their views of the invitation into the NATO and the rejection of the Ukraine and Georgia. A leader of the Ukraine and Georgia would also express emotional information as they now may have harsh feelings toward the NATO due to their rejection.
F) I felt this article was very interesting due to the fact that it occurred on this day. The live information was informative as it gave me something to think about. I wonder how the rejected nations will act toward this agreement. Will they create an alliance that could lead to another Soviet-like nation? I also wonder how Bush’s plan for the missile defense system will work out. It will be interesting to see how the next president of the United States will view the soon-to-be former president’s last actions.
