NATO backs U.S. missile defense plan for Europe

I. NATO backs U.S. missile defense plan for Europe, http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/04/03/europe/nato.php?page=1 April 3, 2008
II. NATO leaders agreed to endorse U.S. missile defense plans for Europe and provide more troops for Afghanistan in an effort by US officials to meet the expectations of President George W. Bush. The new ideas include new missile defense systems and sending more troops to Afghanistan. The main contributor to the new ideas set by the United States President was the President of France who backed up the new concepts and had agreed to send 700 more troops to Afghanistan. France’s president backed up Bush in all of the new plans and believes that this is a turning point for NATO.

A- This article relates to the AP world history theme of the Impact of Interaction. This article discusses the interaction between the United States and European countries in an effort to enhance safety in the world
B- The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was established in April of 1949 in an effort to create a system of collective defense of its members to protect against attacks from an outside party. NATO has been successful in strengthening international safety in the north Atlantic.
C- This article was written by two male American journalists of the New York Times, they are most likely outsider press with no direct relations to the issue.
D- There is no evidence of bias in the article, it is mostly factual information and not opinionated to favor any side as “sides” do not really apply to the issue being discussed.
E- I don’t really think there is a point of view that is missing from the article, it contains many quotes from world leaders although it would be beneficial to hear from out President to get his view on how things are developing with NATO.
F- I think this is great, I think the best way to solve international security is to establish international plans of defense and it is good to know that the US has many allies on the issue of missile defense. I was familiar with NATO but wasn’t really sure what the purpose of the organization was until I read this article. This is a continued step in the right direction for the US and everyone involved.
