Summary:
3 men attacked Ita Fogel, a 69 year old elderly woman. They had beaten her severely. She had burning cigarettes put on her back. She also had bleach and very cold water dumped on her body. This happened over the course of 3 hours. One of these men that attacked her was Eric Schechter. He believed that there was money in her apartment and all three of the men threatened to kill her if she didn’t tell them where the money was. The woman had to be hospitalized for over a month. She suffers from trouble breathing and trauma. Eric Schechter was sentenced to prison for 13 years and the other two men are still on trial. These acts were so cruel they need extensive punishment. More elderly women are being attacked because they can’t fight back. The court has to make an example of these men who committed this crime because they need to show that there are severe punishments.
A) This article has to do with the AP world theme “State-building, expansion, and conflict ”. It has to do with this theme because Ita Fogel was a harassed by 3 men which caused a conflict within the judical system. Also, now the judical system has to make stronger punishments against these attacks which has to do with state-building.
B) There is not too much history been this issue. Only that the judicial system didn’t have such forceful punishments as they do now within this crime.
C) The author of this article is Dan Izenberg. He is a male. He sounds like he is an outsider to the case because he doesn’t know what the other to men’s sentence time is and he is also not apart of the court, which would make him an outsider.
D) This author is definitely against the men that attacked the elderly woman. He made them seem like horrible people and deserving of this sentence. Since it seems like the author is so against the attackers, the author may be stretching the truth to try to get his point across.
E) The person that would give help to understanding this article is Ita Fogel, the woman who was attacked. By seeing her point of view, we will be able to see how vicious these crimes really were. We would also be able to see if the men deserve such a large sentence. Another person that would help with the understanding of this article is the 3 men who attacked Ita. By hearing from them, we would be able to hear the story from a person’s point of view that wasn’t against the 3 men.
F) I think that this was a horrible crime. The fact that these 3 men tortured a helpless, old, woman is disgusting. She was defenseless against these 3 men and there was no way she could fight back. What these 3 men did was cowardice, horrible, and traumatizing to the attacked woman. I think they should be sentenced longer than the average case,

i agree with Julia, i think that is terrible that 3 grown men attacked a poor old women for her money. the only reason why they attacked her, being an old woman, is because she cant fight back. This needs to be stopped because this could happen to other old helpless person, and also this could give others the idea to do the same.
Once again, another act of violence that makes me sick. This is similar to the article I reacted to two weeks ago. It is so sad and sickening. It makes me wonder why there is violence like this in the world. Is there someone who caused this? or have things like this always happened? And like Brittany said, they only did this because of the innocence and inability to fight back of the old woman. It is so sad.
hey julia!!! ight this was such a cruel act on these three mens account. they have no right in doing and having violated a womens rights just for her little purse. its nice to hear this, so it can really warn the defenseless people out there. good job!
