II. Summary
An audio recording is found of Osama Bin Laden urging a holy war with al-Qaida for the freedom of Palestine. He also wants Palestinians who can’t fight in this holy war, or jihad, to fight the war in Iraq. Also in the recording, bin Laden accused Pope Benedict XVI of helping in a “new crusade” against Islam and warned of a "severe" reaction for Europeans' publication of cartoons seen by Muslims as insulting Islam's Prophet Muhammad. He says that the suffering of the Palestinians was caused in the Hamas-controlled Gaza strip when treacherous Arab leaders began supporting the US-hosted Mideast peace conference. This recording was the first time bin Laden spoke of the Palestine question at length.
III. Reactions
A. I think this article relates to the theme “State Building, Expansion and Conflict”. The article is about freedom of Palestine and that they should fight for it. Of course though, it will be a holy war or a jihad. B. Palestine has been trying to be liberated since 1974. There is a group called the Palestine Liberation Organization that was founded by the Arab League in 1964 under the chairmanship of Ahmad Shuqieri, a Palestinian with long experience as an Arab diplomat. The original PLO Charter declared the establishment of Israel "illegal, null and void" and outlined goals to "liberate the homeland" via armed struggle.
C. The authors of this article were Associated Press. It was written from Cairo, Egypt. They are most likely Jewish.
D. The way the authors write the article, it seems that they want what bin Laden is saying to come true. In the article, they wrote many quotes stated from bid Laden and each time they would back it up with some information.
E. A point of view that is missing in this article is a Palestine. I would want to hear from a Palestinian to see how they view this issue. If they were able to explain more about how Palestine should be liberated and why they think bin Laden is even involved, then I think I would be able to understand this article better.
F. I think that Palestine should be liberated because they want to, not just to listen to bin Laden. I don’t understand how we haven’t caught this man yet. I think this article just shows that this man has power and is now trying to get all the Muslims on his side.
