ll. On February 29, 2008 the area around the Red Sea (Jordan, Palestine, Israel) got a earthquake, a 5.3 on the Richter Scale. They get many earthquakes because they are by a fault. It only caused mild damage but it was the strongest earthquake that had hit there in years. Scientists in Palestine and Jordan came together to study them and started with the area around Jericho. They would exam small earthquakes to determine where larger ones might hit.
lll.
a) This article goes with the AP theme of interaction among major societies because Israel, Palestine, and Jordan came together, even though they have different opinions on issues, to protect their people.
b) In 1916 the Ottoman Empire had mandated to France and Britain which divided the Arab region up. Palestine (today’s Jordan, Israel and West Bank) was mandated to Great Britain. Then the British cut Palestine in half a part for the Jews and a part for the Arabs. The Arab half named themselves Jordan. On May 14, 1948 Palestinian Jews named their own state Israel. Both sides had a war ( Israeli War of Independence) and Israel won and gained more land. Today Israel and Jordan have a peace treaty. Also, this area had a 5.2 earthquake on February 11, 2004 that caused a lot of damage.
c) This article was by Ilana Teitelbaum who is women from Jerusalem, so she is an insider.
d) You might want to read this article with caution because she is from the Middle East so she might want it look like Jordan and Israel are really coming together to make her homeland look good when it could just be the scientist getting along.
e) To gain a better understanding of this article I would like to have heard from a Jordan scientist to see if he/she likes working with Israel and to see if their work is really doing good for their region.
f) I think that it’s very good and mature that Jordan and Israel can put their old fights behind to protect the people.

I strongly agree with Katie that the two quarrelsome countries put their pasts aside and help each other out. Katie did such a good job on this article and I give her so much credit for all the historical background that goes all the way back to very early times.
