II. Summary: Tariq Aziz, former deputy to Dictator Saddam Hussein, is near to death. He is so ill it is unlikely he will be tried for his actions with his partner Saddam Hussein. Aziz, who was very close to Saddam, cried on his death. Many people have order for his release so he may be able to be with his grandchildren including Cardinal Emmanuel Delly, the Christian patriarch of the city of Baghdad. It is still uncertain when charges may be placed on Tariq.
III. Reactions:A) This article relates to the AP World History theme of changes in functions and structures of states and in attitudes toward states and political identities, including the emergence of the nation-state. The views of Tariq Aziz have changed with his emergence into and out of politics. He was alongside a leader that helped Iraq function in a centralized manner which may have given him positive reactions. Many outsiders may have looked down upon him due to his actions in government. Now people may feel bad for him as the structure of the Iraqi government has changed.
B) Tariq Aziz is a very unique individual as he was Iraq’s only high-ranked government official. He was more like a representation of Saddam to other nations; he wouldn’t often leave the country. Aziz is receiving charges on his actions after the Gulf War in the Shia Muslim uprising. Tariq, along with the Iraqi government, were able to stop chaos after the war as 10,000s of people were killed in the process.
C) The writer of this article is from Ireland but is reporting in Baghdad, making them an outsider.
D) Ireland has had no influence in the Iraq war, Gulf War, or previous conflicts in the Middle East. The religion wouldn’t seem to have any bias affects as Ireland is mostly Christian. The gender wouldn’t have any influence either as this isn’t a sex-based issue.
E) To gain a full view of this controversy, I would like to here from a member of Aziz’s family to see if they can shed any light on to the court. They may have a strong opinion on why he shouldn’t be charged. The viewpoint of an Iraqi who lived during his term in the government may show an opposing view on the matter.
F) This article was very different from the usual Middle East-based news. This man has a reason to be let free due to his illness. Although he may have made regretful decisions in the past, he is too sick and old to have a great harm on the world today. I also think this helps Muslims gain the respect they deserve as this man was not Islamic, but rather Christian. The conflict of Sunni vs. Shiite isn’t relevant at all as another religion is part of a conflict in the Middle East.
