Migrants killed on Egypt's border
BBC News, March 31, 2008

Summary:
Two african men were killed on the border of Egypt and Israel by guards. They say that the men were in their thirties. The guards said that they two men refused to stop, and that's why they opened fire unto them. An official said that the two men where paying hundreds of dollars for traffickers to help them cross the border into Israel. Guards at the border have shot eight other migrants as well this year alone, and many more have been detained. Most that were detained were Africans. Many people try to cross this border either because of job oppurtunities, or because they want to get away from poor living conditions.

Reactions:
A) This article relates to the AP world history theme "impact of interaction among and within major societies" I think it relates to that them because this article deals with people of another nation trying to immigrate to another, and being killed for it.
B) Many many people every year try to cross this border into Israel. Israel has many oppurtunities and better conditions than surrounding countries. Also, most of the people detained at this border by guards are African.
C) This article does not specifically identify the writer, but I am pretty sure it is a British reporter, since BBC News is a British paper. This may mean that the writer is an outsider on the situation.
D) I wouldn't say that there is much bias on the writer's part, but this article does show racism on the Israeli police's part. They especially arrest Africans more than any other race that attempts to cross this border. Who knows how many people they've let in because of their race?
E) It would be helpful to hear from the two guards to see why they would kill these men, and to what extent they were "refusing to stop".
F) This article upsets mme because two men lost their lives trying to make themselves a better life. I would like to know what they were doing that caused the guards to shoot them, to see if they were really doing anything wrong at all.

I agree with Tara completly becuase its just not right how people die by trying to make things better. If everybody was a better person, the world would be such a better place for life.

I also agree with Tara on this. As much as immigration is illegal in most areas, the men were just trying to help themselves. They obviously cared about the way they lived their lives and should not have been killed for that reason. This shouldn't be happening to anyone and guards should not be having open fire at anyone who attempts to cross without permission.
