Rice apologizes to Obama for passport breach, International Herald Tribune associated with New York Times, March 21 2008, http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/03/21/america/passport.php
II. Summary:
This article was about how three State Department contract workers viewed Barack Obama's passport records without authorization. The Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, personally apologized for the whole mess. Two of the men were fired and the other was reprimanded. Some question whether the incident was politically related, and had something to do with Obama's presidential run. Now the U.S. Justice Department is monitoring the inquiry and State Department's inspector general is investigating. The names of the workers have not and will not be revealed to the public.
III. Reactions:
A) This article relates to Changes in functions and structures of states and in attitude toward states and political identities. Barack Obama is a political leader and the breach of his passport records may have something to do with that.
B) Barack Obama is a presidential candidate and the three men may have wanted to expose something about him, or give people a reason to vote for/against him.
C) This article was written by an American male, making him an insider in the sense that he lives in the country the article is about, but an outsider considering the fact that he wasn't involved with the breach.
D) There's a possibility that the person who wrote this article was on the opposite side of the political spectrum than Barack Obama. If so, he might think it less significant and not as big a deal as someone who supports Obama.
E) I'd like to hear from Obama himself. The article is written as if it isn't really a big deal, but I'm sure he feels upset about the issue, and I'd like to hear his opinion on what happened.
F) I think that the government is responsible for the whole mess, because they should really keep a closer eye on their files and records. Private records (especially those of possible future president's) should be kept safe, where there's no possibility of anyone getting to them. This just shows that the U.S. government is flawed.
