Ronnie Losordo-UN heading for Iraq-style disaster in Darfur

1. Citation: UN heading for Iraq-style disaster in Darfur. March 13, 2008 http://www.mg.co.za/articlepage.aspx?area=/breaking_news/breaking_news__africa/&articleid=334562

2. Summary: There has been an ongoing genocide taking place in Darfur a small region of the country Sudan, Africa. A genocide is a mass murdering of a certain race, in this case being blacks. The sad fact is not many people have learned or even heard about it. This perpetual saga has been going on since 2006. The United Nations, compiled of African, European, and U.S. forces are trying to create an end to this horrid disaster. Politicians and rebels against the move to end this predicament are saying the U.S. are against Islam and aim to destroy Sudan's political and economic structure, through military force. Also the EU (European Union) is blamed for giving a reward to the Sudan rebels after the Darfur protestants turned down a peace agreement in 2006. The blame is for rewarding them with money, aircrafts, and arms. The issue would not have been half as bad if it wasn't for internal corruption. Since the main religion in Sudan is Islam and the events are alike to Iraq, this is being compared to the Al Qaeda group. Fights in Chad (Sudans close neighbor) is also adding to the difficulty declaring war on French troops deployed by the EU. 20,000 troops and rebels died just last month in western Darfur. An issue seeming to be not as treacheruos as it looked, has turned the UN into possibly eluding more peace offers in to Darfur.

3. Reactions: - This article closely relates the the AP theme "State-building, expansion, and conflict" because the people of Sudan and Chad are revolting against what is fair and humane to the thousands of blacks being slaughtered for no reason.
- The issue is expressing how the minority can easily be run over and decimated by the majority who are the Sudan rebels. The UN is trying to put a stop to this, but the effort needs to be more intense.
- The author of this article does not seem to be favoring any side. The facts are coming from both sides just explaining what has been happening and what should start happening.
-I believe a missing point of view would be one from a pressured black civilian living in Darfur. This would help send out the message that these people here really need immediate aid because of what has been happening the past 2 years.
-I think the events that have been occurring in Darfur are unbecoming of any human being. I think the word should be spread to help stop this genocide because it could influence others to think that they could easily take advantage of a minority and not be stopped. The UN must step up to put to rest this mass killing, more support is needed.

This was a really interesting article. It is so true though that many people don't realize what is going on in Darfur. There have been several attempts in our school alone (and among social groups) to raise awareness, but still it is not enough, and the fighting continues. Really good choice, and I hope articles like these help spread awareness of the horrible situation in Darfur.
