Israel can do better against smoking

'Israel can do better against smoking'
Jerusalem Post
5-28-08 http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1211872839005&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull1. This article is about how the Israeli’s are not taking the proper steps to reduce the rate of smoking. It is saying how the US, Canada and Ireland have all made drastic changes in the amount of people that smoke, almost 15 percent. Although it does say that Israel has made few and slim changes, it just isn’t good enough. It says how people are not cautious enough an still do not realize all of the harm that smoking can do not only smokers, but non-smokers as well. It says that an approximate 270,000 children will die if nothing is done.
2. This article relates to the AP world theme of interactions between humans and the environment because it is saying how there is so much availability to smoke and no one takes the initiative upon themselves to say enough is enough. This also relates the AP theme of interactions between humans and their environment because it is showing how people take available things for granted and don’t realize what is good and bad for you.
3. The historical background on this issue is that millions beyond millions of people have died from smoking and have never have done anything about it. Many diseases have been proven to develop from smoking, such as cancer. However, when people smoked 30-40 years ago, there were no where near as many precautions as there is now and still, people smoke knowing how much danger they are putting their bodies in.
4. The person writing this article is a female and is most likely not a Israeli. This women is most likely a non-smoker and/or knows of someone who has suffered from smoking.
5. There are many pieces of evidence which tells me that this writer is against what Israel is doing and is against smoking. She says that people in Israel are not taking smoking precautions seriously and are defiantly going to suffer if something is not done. She says how other countries are doing many great things to stop smoking, meanwhile Israel has done none of these. She is also most likely a non-smoker because she says how so many children will die and that there are way too many people in this world that are still smoking and this number needs to drop dramatically and quickly.
6. The view that is missing from this article is a smoker and a Israeli health advisor. I would like to hear from a smoker to see what their feelings are about how they are putting so much harm to their body and yet they still smoke. I would also like to hear from an Israeli advisor because it would help me to understand how much effort they actually are putting in to stop smoking people.
7. I think that the rate of smokers needs to decrease very quickly. If people realized how much damage they are doing to their body, especially if they are smoking at a young age, I think more people would stop. I think that all countries, not just Israel, need to take smoking precautions much more seriously and should promote them much more.

I totally agree with what Nicole is saying. Smoking is obviously a major issue all over the world. Drastic steps need to be done to change the amount of smokers in the world. People need to be more aware of what they are doing to their bodies, the environment, as well as the people surrounding them. This is an issue that every country needs to look at more closely, not just Israel. Changes need to be made fast while they still can. This issue could eventually spread so wide that it becomes completely uncontrollable, and we certainly don't want that.

I found this article interesting because Israel is focusing on cutting down the amount of smokers in their country, yet there is a war going on. There are far more issues than the amount of smokers in the country such as politcal turmoil.

I found this article interesting because smoking is a problem in Israel, but it is also a major problem in the United States so we can relate to it. It is also an issue that takes place in other countries all over the world. I think they should make sure smokers know how they are putting themselves at risk and how they are harming there bodies. That way, they would consider quitting and keep themselves healthier. There wouldn't be as big of a problem if more people knew the risks of smoking because more people would quit.

I agree with you that if more people would quit if they knew what they were doing to themselves. however it is their choice wether they want to smoke or not and there are a lot of people who still would not quit no matter what we do.

I agree with what you are saying. There are so many smoking related problems that need to be handled, and obvisouly Israel is one of the countries that need to deal with their problems. It pretty much is just killing people for no good reason.
