1.) Citation- Polar bears listed as US threatened species, China Daily, 5-15-08
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/world/2008-05/15/content_6686404.htm
2.) Summary- This article is about the United States putting polar bears on the endangered species list because they are near extinction. The problem is that the U.S. did not give any accompanying proposals to help change the climate, which most scientists say is the cause for the endangerment. The Chinese are mad with the US because they made polar bears endangered but according to them the US did not do anything to help the situation. The scientists are mad because the US did not want to spend the money to help save the polar bears.
3.) Reaction-
The AP World theme that this article pertains to is the impact of technology, economics, and demography on people and the environment. This theme relates perfectly to this problem because it is all about humans messing up the environment, endangering an animal species and not wanting to pay to fix it.
This issue has been going on for a very long time and is more than just the endangerment of the polar bear species. The environment has endangered many species’ in the past but the problem is now that humans have most likely caused the polar bear endangerment and not everyone wants to pay to help fix the problem. Ironically the US, who is always telling counties to be more environmental, does not seem to want to pay to help fix this.
The article is told by a Chinese outsider. This person is an outsider because they do not know what all the US plans are, so all they can do is make assumptions from what has happened already. They are definitely Chinese because they talk about other countries as other countries and china in a way that tells the reader they are Chinese.
This author uses a lot of strong language in this article to get their point across to the reader. They only give information that helps their cause and they do not tell the whole story. They also present the information in a way the helps convey their point (like twisting the information). It seems clear that they do not like the US.
The point of view missing is a US citizen. They know the other side of the story and can fill I the gaps and address the assumptions that this Chinese reporter has put on them. A US citizen can tell the US side of the story and give reason for their good or bad actions.
I believe that China is partially right in saying that the US is selfish and does not want to help pay to fix the problem that we, the humans, have created but I do not think they are right to judge the US so quickly. The polar bears were just put on the endangered species list recently and rebuilding nature takes time. I’m not sure that this reporter accounted for that.
