Washington-Baghdad Deal Denounced
Iran Daily
May 14, 2008
ii. Summary
Iraq has denounced America's efforts to make a security agreement in Baghdad. Iraq's deputy for the cultural and defense propagation affairs of the armed forces says that Americans have come into their country for freedom and democracy but brought with them tanks, airplanes and missiles. He says that America's intrusion into Iraq was the worst thing possible for their country, the middle east and the Persian Gulf. He thinks that the agreement that President Bush proposed would just bring misery to Iraqis. Iraq also accuses America of trying to control Russia's moves and trying to prevent the fall of Israel.
iii. Reactions
a) This article relates to the theme interaction among and within major societies because it as about the interaction between America and Iraq, as well as the interaction between America and Russia and America and Israel. Iraq and America do not get along and Iraq thinks that America is interfering with the decisions of Russia and the power of Israel.
b) America has been in Iraq for a long time and they have continuously tried to form a democracy there. The Iraqi people do not want America to be in their country because they have brought weapons and killed many of their people. Security agreements are often proposed, like the one in this article, but they are often turned down by Iraqis because Iraq wants the US to leave them alone.
c) This article is from "Iran Daily" so therefore it is written by someone from Iran. They are most likely an outsider because the issue is happening within Iraq.
d) The article only gives the opinion of an Iraqi man, who is a General in the armed forces. This should be read with caution because clearly the author of the article is siding with Iraq since they only publish their side of the story. For example, the article talks about the security agreement and America as being the worst thing for Iraq, and an extremely violent and unwanted force now in their society, but it never mentions how the US sees the situation. Also, the article accuses the US of trying to control Russian moves and supporting the illegitimate state of Israel, but does not publish how the US feels about these accusations.
e) The missing voice here is that of America because the Iraqi voice is the only one being published. America probably does not have the same beliefs as Iraq about how bad it is for them to be in their country, and they also probably don't agree with the accusations against them, but the reader would never know this from this article because it does not state any opinion of the US.
f) I think that this is an extremely bias article in favor to Iraq, but I am not really sure of the exact detail of what is going on there, so for all I know America could be doing all of the things that Iraq is accusing them of. I think that if I wanted to find out about what was really happening from both points of view, I would have to read more articles that publish both sides' opinions.
