African News

II. Summary:
This article is about the oil price problem in Kenya. Kenya is struggling from the same problem the US is. Prices of oil and gas are insufficiently rising which is causing a strive for the poorer to get food. Eventually, if this is not changed, the oil prices will keep rising and food and clothing will be very expensive and the population will decline. The economy is also very effected by this because the more expensive the food and other living necessities get, the less people will buy them and the stores will begin to loose money.
III. Reactions:
A) This relates to the third AP World History theme, Impact of technology, economics, and demography on people and the environment. The more expensive the oil gets, the less necessities people will purchase. The oil is very costly because it is getting scarce and harder to find. This means there is less oil being produced.
B) The history of this article has to do with the amount of oil Kenya had before this population increase and economic growth within the country. The government keeps 40% of the oil earnings in order to maintain the cities. Oil prices have been rising and will continue until something is done about this.
C) The point of view in this article is an African news reporter named Maina Waruru. Maina is a black man living in this time period. He is wealthy and is still affected by this issue.
D) If the author of this article was a government official/ruler, the case would have been different. The government needs their share of the money produced by the oil sales so this makes it harder for the people of the town to pay for taxes and goods.
E) I would have liked to hear from a some what poor woman. I would like to see what her life has been like the past couple of years and see how much this production of oil decreased and effected her way of living.

It seems that all over the world people are struggling from the problem and its only getting worse. It's really hard to believe that a country like Kenya, which is already poor to begin with can be suffering with any huge blow like this.
